I remembered then a letter that my mom got from her uncle as she didn’t write to them from long time.
It was written on a 25P post card in the center with quotes as “paluke bangaarumayena?”
What happened later was a different story.
But remembering this incident reminded me the hand-written letters days.
As always, how beautiful were the old good days?
When I was 6 yrs old I had written a letter to my sister who was my care taker.
She went to her home town for some days, and then I wrote a letter to her.
It says “ Roju nenu naa kancham lone annam tinTunnanu, pekaTa aaDutunnanu, park ki velutunnanu, deepthi valla chellito aaDukovaDaaniki velutunnanu” etc etc.(I am eating foo daily in my plate only, I am playing cards, going to park, playing with deepthi's sister....)
It was written on a post card in a very big letters and disordered hand writing.
Till date I have that letter with me and when ever I see that it just refreshes my mind :-)
I think most of us are used to these hand-written letters.
It was so nice to write to our friends who are departed from us, waiting for their letters, fighting with them that they were late to reply, and all the funny things we write in them as if they are our life time serious issues.
Now I read them, I laugh like anything….in some letters we have even shared how a movie was, which dress of the heroine we liked, in which song the choreography was good etc etc ( I am blushing now :-))
One envelope was not enough for us, we used to write in the corners of it and where ever the space is left, we used to fill them.
One of my best friends used to stay in hostel.
I used to write a letter to him every forthnight, and used to end each letter with a quote.
He used to tell that quote to his room mates, and later it so happened that their roommates used to wait for my letters more than him, because they will know a new quote :-)
Can a forwared E-mail in any way replace this pleasure?
In one of the letters my friend has written “venTane reply raayi”.
I replied back saying that it should be “vraayi”, and not raLLu, rappaLu.
He replied back in his next letter as “venTane reply rappa”
(People who dont know telugu, please excuse me, translation will have no fun :-()
Don’t we miss this fun now days when writing our “Tinglish” E-mails? :-(
Later we realized envelopes are not enough, so write them on papers and use the 1Re cover :-)
Once one of my friends has written a 10 pages letter to me :-)
In that, she has just written all about Sirivennela and nothing else.
Not only are the letters, the physical greeting cards, the innocent writings on them ever lasting treasures.
My friend gave me a new year greeting card when I was in 4th standard…it was written that “To D.Uma Rani, 4th standard, Vivekananda school, Happy New year , From
All these on a postal card size greeting card, in the place where we are supposed to write our wishes.
The other friend of mine has made a birthday card for me with a pencil sketch of my passport size photo. It was so touching…till date any other card or a E-greeting couldn’t replace it.
Can any animated greeting card bring this fun now?
How exciting it was to recognize the hand-writing of the address written on the envelope and to know that we got the letter from our dear friend?
I had a friend who never used to write back for any of my letters, and I used to crib a lot. One day finally being fed up with me, the letter was written and posted.
I was informed too through phone that it was posted.
From that day the postal department has started indefinite postal strike.
That letter reached me after 20 days of the posting….which made me to think “YennaLLo vechina udayam….”. But those 20 days I really had good fun when I remembered the co-incidence, how eagerly I waited to receive it.
We never can have that fun in these instant reliable internetworking, right?:-(
The paper, the addressing (priyamaina nestaaniki…) the letters written with a pen, the hand-writing, the words used, the content, the punctuation, the signature in the end, the address on the envelope…..everything used to depict the beauty of the relationship we share, the affection towards the other person, the emotions we express, the confessions we do without any hesitation, the caring for our other friends…and what not?
How much patience we had to write such a long, beautiful letters?
If I look back and find out when the last time I have received or written a letter like that….it makes me feel sad.
Now I never wait for the post man because I know I only get the bank statements in my mail :-(
Ofcourse, I am lucky enough that atleast now and then some people send me the hand-written letters, and have patience and interest to ask me to write the same…
But still I miss the fun of it….and I am sure most of you!!
Whoever read this post, if you are one of them who used to write letters to /receive from me, please write me back, I love to read it.....hope u too love to write!!
People who didnt, can start now :-)
